Microphone Technique for Podcasters

Life in the Slow Lane

When you start recording your podcast, chances are you may be feeling a little nervous. When you're feeling anxious about recording, it's a good idea to watch your pacing. If you rush though your lines, not only will it sound unprofessional, but your listeners may have trouble holding on to what you're saying.

Remember that most of your audience will be listening on headphones: no one wants to listen to someone hyperventilating in their ear! The more time you spend podcasting, the more comfortable you will start to feel. Most of the stress-related recording problems will quickly work themselves out and go away with the simple practice of recording a few shows.

Podcasting Mind Games

When your record your podcast, don't think you have to speak in a “radio style” voice. Depending on your audience and format, most people get their best recordings when they speak with a normal tone and volume.

One trick I often use is to imagine that I am speaking to a specific person when I read my lines. This helps me imagine the audience that I am speaking to, and makes my podcast sound like it is addressed to each on of my listeners on a one-to-one basis.
